Preschool at Matheny
The Matheny Preschool Classroom is a nurturing, safe, and therapeutic environment fostering learning as well as the social and emotional development so critical during the early childhood years. Our preschool team is comprised of certified special education preschool teachers, physical, speech, and occupational therapists, as well as a full-time registered school nurse. Together they work hand-in-hand to ensure every instructional and therapeutic activity is fully integrated in the classroom so as to meet the specific learning, therapy, health, and safety needs of each child.
Our small class size allows highly personalized attention and individualized instruction throughout the entire school day. Here the preschool team creates individualized opportunities for each child to engage all of the five senses to promote self-direction. Through the use of switch adapted toys, touch screen computers and iPads, a specially designed sensory room, and an extensive array of therapy tools, the preschool team leads fun and stimulating activities to help students achieve their individualized goals.
Goals of the Preschool Program:
- Establish communication abilities
- Develop fine and gross motor skills
- Support social and emotional growth
- Develop a strong school-to-home connection
Preschool options include full day, half day and extended school year programs. We recognize this is most likely the child’s first experience spending time away from home so we help both child and parents adjust by encouraging parents to visit and participate in the classroom. The option of half-day pre-school is also available to ease the transition to school.
