Independent Living for Adults

While Matheny is providing its expertise and services to people with disabilities in the community, its Adult Services program is designed to assist Matheny adult patients in attaining their highest level of independent functioning.

The Adult Services program includes five community residences and two adult learning centers – one in Hillsborough, NJ, and one at its Peapack campus.

A total of 30 adults live in Matheny’s five community residences. These residences are licensed by the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) and provide their occupants with the opportunity to live as independently as possible – shopping, interacting with neighbors and working or attending classes during the day.

Adult residents, also including individuals from other community residences, attend the Adult Learning Center program several times a week, taking classes in a wide range of disciplines, from daily living to money management to attendance at and participation in a variety of community events. As part of this program, they are taught the skills necessary for volunteering and for job placement.
