Save the Date!

Saturday, November 2, 2019

Matheny Arts Access Program is a unique fine arts program where individuals with disabilities can fully express themselves in the arts. Please join us to celebrate art without limits! Full Circle is a multi-disciplinary fine arts showcase featuring original work created by the Arts Access artists. We are proud to celebrate and share their exceptional creations in painting, digital art & sculpture, dance, drama and creative writing. In addition to showcasing visual art gallery exhibition, and the stage showcasing performance pieces by choreographers, dramatists and writers, Full Circle features gourmet food tasting.

The Full Circle has been a platform for our artists to present their work and define themselves not by what they can’t do, but by what they can do.

Matheny Welcomes the Largest Class of Interns to Date!

Everyone at Matheny is thrilled to welcome the third class of Rutgers Biomedical Engineering School Interns! This is the largest class since the program’s inception in 2017.  All 23 students will hit the ground running after this week’s immersion program where they will learn the ins and outs of Matheny’s programs. More importantly, they will meet the wonderful people who work here and best of all, they will meet our residents and students. The overarching goal of the program is to improve the lives of people with disabilities through innovation and research  and these are just the students to make that happen. Stay tuned for more as the week goes on.

Rest in peace, Larry. We miss you.

Message from the President of Matheny:

From time to time we have giants in the midst of our Matheny community.  These giants are not always the loudest, tallest, or demand the most attention, but quietly move behind the scenes steering through others.

Larry Thornton was one of those giants.  We feel privileged to have known Larry, who always seemed to push us and others to do more work on behalf of the students and patients that we serve.  Thanks to Larry we have LAR (The Learning Accessibility Robot), The Lowe’s Community Garden, a repaved nature trail, Home Depot planting boxes, a hydroponics station, and much more.  Larry developed and fostered a relationship between Matheny and Rutgers bio-engineering school which will develop new forms of assistive technology to help people worldwide.  Larry also brought in different Knights of Columbus Councils to Matheny to assist in fundraising.  Until recent health concerns prevented his participation Larry kept a regiment of volunteering three times a week in the school and also served on both the Matheny School Board Committee and the Board of Trustees.  Larry loved the children, the staff, and the spirit of Matheny.

Peapack, NJ- National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $27 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019.  Included in this announcement is a Challenge America grant of $10,000 to the Arts Access Program at Matheny for their Full Circle 2019 event. Challenge America grants support projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations—those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability.

“The arts enhance our communities and our lives, and we look forward to seeing these projects take place throughout the country, giving Americans opportunities to learn, to create, to heal, and to celebrate,” said Mary Anne Carter, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Eileen Murray, Director of the Arts Access Program at Matheny, said “We are deeply appreciative to the National Endowment for the Arts for this generous award. This funding enables us to present Full Circle 2019, Arts Access’ signature arts event, showcasing and celebrating the remarkable visual, literary, and performing art created by our artists with disabilities. The artists take their rightful place in the spotlight, receiving recognition and applause for their tremendous accomplishments. We thank the NEA for supporting this unique event, Arts Access’ mission, and the limitless creativity that resides within our talented artists.”

Full Circle 2019, takes place on November 2nd, 2019 in the Robert Schonhorn Arts Center on the Matheny campus in Peapack. It consists of professional performers, designers, and curators who work alongside Arts Access artists to help bring their visions to life.
