“The arts enhance our communities and our lives, and we look forward to seeing these projects take place throughout the country, giving Americans opportunities to learn, to create, to heal, and to celebrate,” said Mary Anne Carter, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Eileen Murray, Director of the Arts Access Program at Matheny, said “We are deeply appreciative to the National Endowment for the Arts for this generous award. Generous Grant Awarded to Matheny’s Arts Access Program

August 23, 2018, PEAPACK, NJ – Matheny is pleased to announce that the New Jersey State Council on the Arts has awarded a generous grant of over $37,000 to its innovative Arts Access Program. Arts Access, an integral part of Matheny, provides people with disabilities unlimited freedom to create and participate in the fine arts. The prestigious FY19 award supports Matheny’s mission of enhancing the quality of life for people with medically complex disabilities.

Part of a three-year funding cycle, the grant demonstrates New Jersey’s commitment to the arts for people with disabilities and underserved populations.  The Arts Council also announced Matheny as an FY19 Major Presenting and Service Organization and presented a Citation of Excellence.

Eileen Murray, Director of Arts Access, said, “We are extremely grateful to the NJ State Council on the Arts for their long-term and strong support of the Matheny Arts Access Program. Their generosity enables us to offer our artists the opportunity to fully express themselves through the arts. Arts Access, and all of New Jersey, is fortunate to have such a dynamic and dedicated arts council.” Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, Arts Access is a premiere fine arts program for people with disabilities throughout New Jersey. Support from the NJ State Council on the Arts also helps to bring the artists’ work to the public eye, through events such as Full Circle, Arts Access’ yearly arts celebration. Full Circle 2018 will take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018, and will showcase the Matheny artists’ work in the visual, literary and performing arts. Murray states, “Thanks to the generosity of organizations such as the NJ State Council on the Arts, the artists have a chance to shine and receive recognition for their artistic accomplishments.”

Matheny is also grateful to Governor Phil Murphy, Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver, and our legislative representatives, Senator Michael Doherty, Assemblyman John DiMaio, and Assemblyman Erik Peterson for making these resources available in order to offer these invaluable services to people with disabilities.

Charles “Chuck” Matheny 1941-2017

Dear Matheny Friends and Family:

Mr Matheny DSC_4738 cropped

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you of the passing of Matheny School’s first student and the face of the Matheny community, Mr. Charles H. Matheny.  Charles was the inspiration and the catalyst for the origins of the school, which has become so many things to many different people, including a hospital, a clinic, a fine arts program, adult program, and group homes.  Mr. Matheny was and is a beacon of possibility and a model of excellence to which all our students, residents, patients, and clients can aspire to be.  During his lifetime, Mr. Matheny finished high school, learned to drive, mowed all the lawns of Matheny’s main campus, and ran the soda machines.

Mr. Matheny was far more than the sum of his accomplishments. He developed close relationships with all the staff and was interested in improving the lives of everyone within the Matheny Community.  He loved to attend Matheny fundraisers and Friends of Matheny events, conversing with people from all walks of life, and he took a very real interest in the students who resided in the school that bore his family name.  He attended back-to-school nights, graduations, plays, choir concerts, and museum coffee houses.  In fact, anything Matheny — he was all in.  Mr. Matheny was kind, humorous, and compassionate. Per his family: “Chuck lived an incredibly rich and meaningful life — a testament to the love and care that is cultivated and shared at Matheny. We are so grateful to the many friends, coworkers, and caregivers who have crossed his path and enriched his life.”

We will all miss Mr. Matheny, yet we shall carry on embodying the undeniable spirit of Charles H. Matheny.
